How and why do we tell stories through animation? Students explore the visual vocabulary of animation critically in order to communicate their intent in effective, meaningful and innovative ways. Through a variety of lenses such as identity, bodies, land and sustainability, social justice, and abstraction, students develop personal artistic responses that reflect an expanded awareness of animation's possibilities as an interdisciplinary medium. Studio projects, writing and discussions engage with screenings, readings and lectures on historical and contemporary animation practices. What is experimental animation, and how does it relate to other kinds of moving images? This large-format course introduces a critical understanding of animation as a pervasive medium in contemporary culture.
Techniques introduced include: drawing for 2D animation, stop-motion, rotoscoping and sound design for animation.
